Monsters
Be careful, child, and hear my words.
I'm your Mother, and I speak with concern.
There are real-life monsters in this world hunting us
Beings that will gobble up and devour your right to justice.
No. These monsters don't hide under your bed at night
They walk around in broad daylight.
They greedily trade c.r.e.a.m. for your childhood dreams
Ignoring the Motherland's cries and screams.
No, that water gun isn't for you.
These monsters don't care about its toyish hues.
They'll shoot you dead in 2 seconds flat
Then walk away and receive pats on the back
These monsters don't hide in your closet while you sleep.
They'll snatch your life right up while your Mother weeps.
Aiming guns at your Black crown or hanging nooses to see the effects
Kneeling on your beautiful brown body, crushing your beautiful brown neck.
All the while, you taste the rainbow under the sun
Walking, talking with your friends, having laughs, having fun.
These monsters contort you into something untrue,
Walking, smoking, drug-dealing thugs using ‘law-n-order' to hunt you.
What do these monsters look like, you ask.
Some are easy to spot because they wear white hooded masks
Most hide behind smiles, science, religion, politics, power and money
What's clear is your life doesn't matter to them, honey.
They come in all shapes and sizes, different hues and features
The common theme is our God-given brown skin disturbs these creatures.Â
It doesn't matter what we're doing – as long as we exist
Living while Black, is an uninsurable risk.
Be careful, child, and hear my words.
I'm your Mother, and I speak with concern.
There are real-life monsters in this world hunting us
And they will gobble up and devour your right to justice.Â
